If you have been researching weight-loss injections, three names tend to come up again and again: Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy.
They are related, but they are not the same medicine.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 receptor. Just as importantly, the brand names have different approved uses and dosing schedules, so they should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they are all discussed in weight-loss conversations.
That distinction matters when you are deciding what to discuss with a doctor.
This guide explains the differences in plain language, including how each medication works, who they are used for, weight-loss evidence, dosing, side effects, cost considerations, and what happens after stopping treatment.
Medical note: This is an educational comparison, not a prescription or recommendation. These medicines are prescription treatments, and suitability depends on your medical history, current medicines, health conditions and the indication approved for the specific product in your country.

The current U.S. Mounjaro label identifies tirzepatide as a GIP/GLP-1 agonist and, as of August 2026, includes a cardiovascular-risk indication for certain adults with type 2 diabetes. The current Ozempic label identifies semaglutide as a GLP-1 receptor agonist with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and kidney-related indications. Wegovy’s current U.S. label covers chronic weight management and additional cardiovascular and liver-related indications.
Brand indications vary by country, so the prescribing information applicable in the UAE should be followed by your treating physician.
What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a medicine that activates two hormone receptors: GIP and GLP-1.
These pathways are involved in appetite, food intake and glucose regulation. Tirzepatide is given by subcutaneous injection and, in the current U.S. Mounjaro label, treatment starts at 2.5 mg once weekly before increasing according to the prescribed schedule. The U.S. maximum adult dose is 15 mg once weekly.
One important point often missed online is that Mounjaro and Zepbound contain the same active ingredient, tirzepatide, but are separate branded products with different approved indications in the U.S.
For a detailed explanation of Mounjaro treatment in Dubai, see our Mounjaro Weight Loss Injection in Dubai page.
What Is Wegovy?
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist.
Wegovy is specifically associated with chronic weight management. The current U.S. label indicates Wegovy alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for reducing excess body weight and maintaining weight reduction long term in eligible adults and certain adolescents. It also carries approved cardiovascular and, under the current U.S. label, MASH indications.
In the U.S., the usual maintenance dose for Wegovy injection is 2.4 mg once weekly, with a newer 7.2 mg Wegovy HD injection approved in March 2026.
A major UAE update for 2026
Wegovy has also changed in the UAE.
The Emirates Drug Establishment approved oral once-daily Wegovy in June 2026, and its current registered-product directory lists both injection and tablet presentations. The directory was refreshed in September 2026 and lists active Wegovy injection strengths as well as 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg tablet presentations.
That means older articles saying “Wegovy is only an injection” are now outdated for the UAE.
Availability of a particular presentation at a Dubai clinic or pharmacy should still be confirmed before treatment.
Read our Wegovy Injections in Dubai guide for treatment-specific information.
What Is Ozempic?
Ozempic also contains semaglutide, so it shares its active ingredient with Wegovy.
The important difference is that Ozempic and Wegovy are different branded products with different approved uses and dosing considerations.
The current U.S. Ozempic label indicates it for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control and, in specified populations, to reduce certain cardiovascular and kidney risks.
This is why it is inaccurate to simply describe Ozempic as “the same as Wegovy for weight loss.”
People may lose weight while taking Ozempic, but Ozempic should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a product specifically indicated for chronic weight management.

Mounjaro vs Ozempic vs Wegovy: What Is the Main Difference?
The easiest way to understand them is to separate the active ingredient from the brand name.
Mounjaro = tirzepatide
Tirzepatide acts on:
GIP + GLP-1
Wegovy = semaglutide
Semaglutide acts on:
GLP-1
Ozempic = semaglutide
Ozempic also contains:
semaglutide / GLP-1
So:
Wegovy and Ozempic share the same active ingredient, but they are not simply interchangeable products.
Mounjaro is chemically different because it contains tirzepatide.
Mounjaro vs Wegovy for Weight Loss:
This is one of the questions people ask most often.
There is now useful head-to-head evidence rather than relying only on separate studies.
In the 72-week SURMOUNT-5 trial, adults with obesity but without type 2 diabetes received tirzepatide or semaglutide at maximum tolerated doses. Mean weight reduction was approximately 20% with tirzepatide and 14% with semaglutide at 72 weeks.
That is useful evidence, but it needs to be put into context.
The study compared tirzepatide with semaglutide used at obesity-treatment doses. It did not compare Mounjaro against Ozempic as branded products, and the participants did not have type 2 diabetes.
So you should not take the 20% versus 14% figures and assume that the same percentage will occur in every patient.
Individual results vary with starting weight, dose, duration, adherence, lifestyle, medical conditions and treatment tolerance.
Mounjaro vs Ozempic for Weight Loss:
The evidence here needs a little more explanation.
A well-known head-to-head diabetes study, SURPASS-2, compared tirzepatide with semaglutide 1 mg in people with type 2 diabetes taking metformin.
At 40 weeks, average weight reductions were greater with tirzepatide at 5, 10 and 15 mg than with semaglutide 1 mg. The estimated treatment differences were approximately 1.9 kg, 3.6 kg and 5.5 kg, respectively.
But this does not mean that Mounjaro will cause exactly 1.9–5.5 kg more weight loss than Ozempic for every patient.
Why?
Because the study population had type 2 diabetes, the semaglutide comparator was 1 mg, and the trial was designed primarily around blood-glucose control rather than obesity treatment.
For a weight-management comparison, the later SURMOUNT-5 trial provides a more directly relevant comparison between tirzepatide and semaglutide at obesity-treatment doses.
Wegovy vs Ozempic: Are They the Same?
They share the same active ingredient:
Semaglutide.
But the brands are used differently.
The current U.S. Ozempic label covers type 2 diabetes and specified cardiovascular and kidney-risk indications. Wegovy’s current label includes chronic weight management and additional approved indications.
There are also differences in available doses and formulations.
For example, current U.S. Wegovy labeling includes weekly injections up to 7.2 mg with Wegovy HD and oral Wegovy tablets, while the current Ozempic label remains an injectable semaglutide product.
So:
Same active ingredient does not mean same product, same indication or same dose.
How Do Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic Work?
These medicines influence hormone pathways involved in appetite and glucose regulation.
Mounjaro:
Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors.
Wegovy:
Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptor.
Ozempic:
Semaglutide also activates the GLP-1 receptor.
For patients, the practical effect can include reduced appetite, increased feelings of fullness and lower food intake, alongside effects on blood-glucose regulation.
These medicines are not simply “fat-burning injections.” They work through metabolic and appetite-related pathways and should be used as part of an appropriate medical weight-management plan.
How Much Weight Can You Lose?
There is no single number that applies to all three medicines.
Clinical trial results provide average changes in specific study populations, not guarantees for individual patients.
For context:
- In STEP 1, semaglutide 2.4 mg produced a mean body-weight reduction of about 15.3 kg, or approximately 15%, over 68 weeks in adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes.
- In SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide produced approximately 20% mean weight reduction, compared with about 14% with semaglutide, at 72 weeks in adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes.
- In a type 2 diabetes trial of semaglutide 2 mg, the mean weight reduction at 40 weeks was about 6.9 kg.
These figures should not be placed side by side as though they were all from the same trial. The populations, doses, study duration and treatment goals differ.
What Happens When You Stop?
This is one of the most important questions—and one that many short comparison articles leave out.
Weight management with these medicines may require long-term planning.
In the STEP 1 extension, people who stopped semaglutide after 68 weeks regained a substantial amount of the weight they had lost. One year after withdrawal, participants had regained about two-thirds of their previous weight loss on average.
That doesn’t mean everyone will regain the same amount.
It means patients should not assume:
“I’ll take the injections until I reach my target weight and then the weight will automatically stay off.”
A doctor should discuss what happens after reaching a target, including whether continued treatment, dose adjustment or another maintenance strategy is appropriate.
Mounjaro vs Ozempic vs Wegovy Side Effects:
The three medicines have overlapping side-effect profiles because they affect related gastrointestinal and metabolic pathways.
Common side effects can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Abdominal discomfort
- Reduced appetite
- Indigestion or other gastrointestinal symptoms
The current Mounjaro and Wegovy labeling identifies gastrointestinal reactions as common and notes that some reactions can be severe.
The severity and duration vary between patients and may be more noticeable when treatment starts or the dose is increased.
Important Safety Information:
These medicines are not suitable for everyone.
Thyroid C-cell tumor warning
Current U.S. labeling for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic contains a boxed warning concerning thyroid C-cell tumors based on findings in rodents. Mounjaro and Wegovy are contraindicated in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2; Ozempic’s labeling contains the corresponding warning and contraindication.
Other important risks
Depending on the medicine and patient, prescribing information includes warnings relating to:
- Pancreatitis
- Gallbladder disease
- Severe gastrointestinal reactions
- Dehydration and acute kidney injury
- Hypoglycemia when used with insulin or insulin-secretagogues
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions
- Diabetic retinopathy complications in relevant patients
- Delayed gastric emptying
Mounjaro’s current label also warns that it can affect absorption of some oral medicines and contains specific advice concerning oral contraceptives after starting treatment or increasing the dose.
Wegovy’s current label similarly warns about delayed gastric emptying, gastrointestinal reactions, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and other risks.
Pregnancy
These medicines should not be treated as routine weight-loss products during pregnancy. Current prescribing information includes pregnancy warnings, and the specific instructions differ by product.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding before starting treatment.
Can You Take Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy Together?
No. They should not be combined on your own.
Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide.
The current Wegovy label specifically states that concomitant use with other semaglutide-containing products or another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended.
Do not combine, alternate or switch these medicines without a prescribing physician’s instructions.
Can You Switch From Ozempic to Wegovy or Mounjaro?
A doctor may consider switching treatment when clinically appropriate.
The decision depends on:
- Why you are taking the medicine
- Your current dose
- Your response
- Side effects
- Other medicines
- Blood-glucose status
- Weight-management goals
- Medical history
There is no safe universal “switching dose” that should be copied from an internet article.
Your physician should provide the transition schedule.
Which One Is Used for Diabetes?
This is another area where online articles are often confusing.
Ozempic is indicated for type 2 diabetes in its current U.S. labeling. Mounjaro is also indicated for type 2 diabetes in its current U.S. labeling.
Wegovy is primarily associated with chronic weight management, although its current U.S. labeling now includes additional cardiovascular and MASH indications.
The exact approved indications in Dubai/UAE can differ from U.S. labeling, so prescribing decisions should follow the medicine’s current UAE registration and the physician’s assessment.
Which One Is for Weight Loss?
This needs to be answered carefully.
Wegovy is specifically a semaglutide product for chronic weight management in eligible patients.
Tirzepatide is also used for chronic weight management, but in the U.S. the weight-management brand is Zepbound, while Mounjaro is labeled for type 2 diabetes.
In Dubai, what a doctor prescribes depends on the locally approved product, availability and your medical circumstances.
That is why it is better to ask:
“Which treatment is medically appropriate for my condition?”
rather than simply:
“Which injection is strongest?”
Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy Dosing:
Dosing should always be individualized and prescribed.
For general reference, current U.S. labels include:
Mounjaro
Starts at 2.5 mg once weekly, followed by dose escalation according to the prescribing information. The adult maximum in the current U.S. label is 15 mg once weekly.
Wegovy injection
Starts at 0.25 mg once weekly, followed by gradual escalation. The usual recommended maintenance dose is 2.4 mg weekly, with 7.2 mg Wegovy HD now also included in U.S. labeling for certain patients.
Ozempic
The current U.S. label starts at 0.25 mg once weekly, followed by 0.5 mg and further increases when clinically appropriate; the current label includes doses up to 2 mg once weekly.
These are reference points from current U.S. prescribing information—not a personal dose recommendation for a Dubai patient.
How Much Do Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy Cost in Dubai?
There isn’t one fixed price for these medicines.
Cost can change according to:
- Medicine and brand
- Dose
- Treatment duration
- Availability
- Clinical supervision
- Consultation and follow-up
- Package structure
For Medicure patients, we maintain dedicated treatment and pricing pages rather than putting a changing price into every comparison article.
See:
Mounjaro Injection Cost in Dubai
Before publishing a specific AED figure on this comparison article, I recommend keeping it synchronized with the clinic’s approved current price list. Your current Mounjaro pages display different prices, so putting one number into a general comparison article would create another inconsistency.
Why Do Prices Differ So Much?
A low starting price doesn’t necessarily mean the total treatment will cost less.
For example, the price may depend on the dose and how long the patient remains on treatment.
A comparison should therefore look at total treatment cost, not just the price of one injection.
Your doctor can explain the expected treatment duration and monitoring requirements after assessing you.
Mounjaro vs Ozempic vs Wegovy: Which One Should You Take?
There isn’t one medicine that is appropriate for every person.
A doctor may consider:
- Your diagnosis
- BMI and weight history
- Type 2 diabetes status
- Cardiovascular health
- Kidney or liver conditions
- Previous weight-management treatments
- Current medication
- Digestive health
- Pregnancy plans
- Treatment goals
- Potential contraindications
- Local product indications and availability
The fact that a medicine produces a larger average weight reduction in a clinical trial does not automatically make it the right medicine for an individual patient.
A proper assessment comes first.
What Should You Ask Your Doctor Before Starting?
A useful consultation is not just:
“Which injection should I take?”
Ask:
What is the likely cause of my weight problem?
Which medicines are approved and suitable for my situation?
What results are realistic for me?
What side effects should I watch for?
How long might treatment continue?
What happens if the medication is stopped?
What will the total treatment cost be?
Those questions give you much more useful information than choosing a medicine from an online ranking.
